Jasmeen Kanwal

Welcome to the homepage of Dr. Jasmeen Kanwal! I am a postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews, working with Dr. Andy Gardner on the social evolution of digital organisms. I did my PhD at the Centre for Language Evolution at the University of Edinburgh.

My academic interests are wide-ranging, but perhaps can all be connected under theme of ‘complex systems science’. In the past I have studied physics, philosophy of science, linguistics, and cognitive science. My research focuses on the explanation of complex patterns, and is driven by the maxim that studying the mechanisms by which systems change over time is crucial to understanding why these systems look the way they do now. To investigate these complex systems, I use a combination of behavioural experiments, statistical analyses, corpus studies and agent-based modelling. Most recently I have been dipping my toes into web-developing, after coding up some multi-player communication experiments to run on crowdsourcing platforms, and also simulations of evolving populations which can be interacted with by the public through a web browser. You can read more about my past and current research projects on my research page
