Welcome to the homepage of Jasmeen Kanwal! I am a final-year PhD student at the Centre for Language Evolution at the University of Edinburgh. My academic interests are wide-ranging, but perhaps can all be connected under theme of ‘complex systems science’. I have studied physics, philosophy of science, linguistics, and cognitive science. Methodologically, I mainly run behavioural experiments and do statistical analyses, but I also occasionally work with corpus studies and computational modelling. Most recently I have been dipping my toes into web-developing, after coding up some multi-player communication experiments to run on crowdsourcing platforms.
My research focuses on the explanation of complex patterns (in human language, mostly), and is driven by the maxim that studying the mechanisms by which systems change over time is crucial to understanding why these systems look the way they do now. You can read more about my past and current research projects on my research page.
